    • December 24, 1883 is the license date on the marriage license and certificate for Frank and Sarah Jane and the certificate was filed on 18 March 1884. The return that the minister supposedly filed and signed says they were married on 25 December 1884. It seems most likely that the minister or whoever filled out that portion of the record wrote 1884 by mistake as it was already two and a half months into 1884 before it was recorded.

      On this first document, on the license portion Frank's name is written twice -- both as RICHISON. On marriage certificate portion, in different handwriting, his surname is RICHARDSON.

      In the register for Records of Returns of Marriages, the date of license is 6 March 1884, the date of the return is 18 March 1884, and the date of marriage is 25 December 1884. Everyone else on the page had a license issued and the marriage date within the first 3 months of 1884 so it appears that again, whoever recorded this page just made a mistake and wrote 1884 when it obvious had to have been 1883. The handwriting also appears to be the same as that on the marriage certificate portion of the first document and Frank's surname again is RICHARDSON.

      The first couple on the page were both marrying for the second time. Frank and Sarah are the second couple on the page and Sarah is said to be marrying for the second. No other evidence has to come to light to indicate this was indeed her second marriage. Although Sarah was listed with her parents in the 1880 U.S. census, she had ample time to have a marriage of short duration before marrying Frank in 1883. With all the other mistakes in the two marriage records, however, it also could be that the person filling out the register was simply repeating what was on the previous record and it was Sarah's first marriage, not her second.

      The WPA record of Jay County, gives 25 Dec 1883 as the marriage date. That record was done in the late 1930's or early 1940's and is said to have been created from the original records.
