RESEARCH NOTES: A John Richison is listed in the 1880 census living with his son Newton Ruchison, in Logan County, Ohio, age 80. He was enumerated on 5 June living there and it is noted he has paralysis. On 22 June, a John Richison is living with his son, Newton's older brother, John Webster Richison, in Jay County, Indiana. Both entries say he was born in Pennsylvania but the Newton entry says John's father was born in Germany and the John Webster entry says that both John's parents were born in Ireland. Is this the same John Richison or two different ones? Newton's father-il was born in Germany but he died in 1864 so he can't be the John of Newton's entry.

After following the family of Anna Carlo Richison, Newton's wife, it appears the John living in Jasper's home in 1880 may have been a brother of his wife Anna, John CARLO. The age, of course, is wrong but John CARLO was still living at home at age 18 in the 1870 census with his mother, Anna. She died at the home of her daughter Anna (Carlo) RIchison in 1878 according to a bio in an Allen & Van Wert Counties, Ohio history. Her son John CARLO could have moved with her when she moved into her daughter's home.

John is listed as "works on farm" in 1870 but he could have become paralysed between 1870 and 1880. The same history says John was deceased by 1896 when it was published and Anna (Carlo) Richison seems to have nursed quite a few family members at their deaths. Her brother John might have been one of them, especially if he was in ill health or had problems after his mother's death in 1878.

Also the 1880 entry for Jasper says the John living with him was born Pennsylvania and his father was born in Germany. John CARLO's father was born in Germany so the information is a bit mixed up. This theory certainly makes more sense than an 80 year-old traveling back and forth between Ohio and Indiana in such a short period of time.

      -------------------------------------------------

In the 1880 Census, Jane RICHISON COOK says both her mother and her father were born in Ohio while John R in the same Census says they were born in Ireland. It seems unlikely that Jane would make such a "mistake" if she and John R really are brother/sister or perhaps someone other than Jane answered the questions for the Census.

The death cert of John Webster is the only place the middle initial of "R" is shown for John. Informant was likely Silas Alva, John W's son as Silas was the informant on the interment record at Beech Grove.

[My John R. would have only been about 8 years on in 1808 so this only shows another possible Richison/Richardson individual in the area.]

      ----------------------------------
    • The "Richison Family Record" gives John's death date as 23 Dec 1880 but his gravestone clearly says 4 Dec 1880. His birth date is verified as stated in the John Richison Bible as 11 Jan 1800 by his age at death on the gravestone as 80y 10m 23d.

(HISTORY OF CLARK CO, OHIO, P.697, Pike Township)

"The Christian Church was organized in 1839, at the house of Elijah PRIEST, under the charge of Rev. J. Kirby. The original members were John PRIEST and wife Catharine, Andrew CLARK and wife Nancy, and Mary CLARK, John RICHARDSON and wife Elizabeth, L. DAVIS and wife Sarah. At first they worshiped at the houses of the members. In 1840, a hewed-log house was built on the corner of L. DAVIS' land, and, in 1852, the present one-story frame building, situated on Section 34, was erected at a cost of about $1,000."

      P. 707, Bethel Township After naming settlers who came between 1800-1810 is the following: "Among the old settlers who came later than the above, mention might be made of the following and their places of settlement: John HUSTED, who setted on Donnel's Creek, Section 9; Jacob FUNDERBURG, on Section 9; John RICHINSON, on Section 9; and Jacob LEFFEL, who settled on Section 17 about 1817." [John R. would only be 10 years old in 1810 so this must be some other John Richison/Richeson in the area.]

      -----------------------------------------------

(Clark County, Ohio Newspaper Abstracts, Vol.III, P.3, Springfield Pioneer Newspaper, 30 Oct 1835)

"Stray: we the undersigned by order of J. Black, J.P. of Pike Twp., viewed and appraised a stray taken up by John Sluser of said twp., and appraised at $25.

      John Richison, Appr.

      ----------------------------------------------

SRF note - seems strange that John would buy land in Clark Co., OH in 1835 and then more in Delaware Co., IN in 1837. As far as I can tell, he never lived in Delaware Co., IN although some of his descendants did. Did he just buy the land to turn around and sell it? Need to see what Delaware Co. has on this land.

From the Pension Application of Eleanor RICHISON WALLACE as the widow of Hugh WALLACE as published on the website of Jo Hubbard, http://jhubb22.net/page34.htm/PENSION APPLICATION. See a similar statement by Jane RICHISON COOK concerning this wedding.

      State of Ohio Clarke County

Before me, Judge of the Court of Probate in and for said County, personally came John Richison, who being duly sworn says that he well knew one Hugh M Wallace deceased who was a soldier in Capt Sam'l Black's Co. Ohio Militia--War of 1812 and with his wife (now widow) Eleanor Wallace-formerly Eleanor Richison-and that he was present at the wedding of said Hugh M. Wallace and Eleanor Richison and was an eye witness of the ceremony which occurred on the 6th of July 1814 in Clarke Co., Ohio- and further that he is not interested in the widows claim for pension.

      John Richison (signature)

Sworn to and subscribed before me this 4th day of May D. D. 1872, and I certify that said John Richison is a man of credibility and that I am not interested in the said claim.

Witness my hand and to seal of said Court this day and your above matters. E. G. Dial Probate Judge

[Although John was buying land in Indiana, the Patent says he was "of Clark County, Ohio" and he will be filed with the Ohio RICHISONs.

This patent was issued on the same date as one to a George RICHESON of Cass County, Indiana who was buying land in Clinton Co., Indiana. In March of 1837, Andrew RICHESON of Clark County, Ohio bought land in Cass County, IN. I believe these three were brothers, born within a couple of years of each other with Andrew being the oldest, then George, then John.]

There is no return in this book so they may have been married elsewhere as only the family Bible and tradition have given the date of 6 December 1821 as the actual marriage date.

The Richardson that took an oath that John and Elizabeth were of age appears to be an "s" and then a superscript d. The other party to the oath, Solomon Kelly, was married to Elizabeth's sister in 1811 and would be John's brother-in-law by this marriage to Elizabeth.
