    • The date of 1838 for John Webster's birth came from a bio of George A. Richison, one of John's sons, written many years after John's birth. Much better sources, a family Bible record, and earlier census records all point to 1837 as being the more probable date.

  • Notes
    • In two places, John Webster's birth place is given as Darke Co., Ohio -- on the back of his death certificate (informant was Silas A. Richison and in his obituary (Silas A. a likely informant there as well). All his brothers and sisters are presumed to have been born in the Clark Co., Ohio area so without further clarification, Darke Co. will be listed as his birth place and Clark Co. will be noted as an alternate birth place.

Starting with an index created by the DAR in Clark Co., Ohio, the marriage date of John and Sarah was reported as either 21 Nov 1859 or 15 Feb 1860 by many sources. When a copy of the record was obtained, it was finally determined that they were actually married on 24 Nov [John W's birthday) 1859. The 21st is the date their license was issued and 15 Feb 1860 is when the return was recorded by the clerk.

John Webster was a school teacher north of Pennville, Indiana, according to Opal Irene (Richison) Keeley. It was also mentioned by his son George Andrew in his bio in Memoirs of Jay County, Indiana. The article below would seem to confirm it.

The Portland Commercial, Vol.XIV, No. 26, p3, col.5, Portland, Ind.: Thursday, 13 Feb 1879, Recorder's Office, Courthouse, Portland, Ind.

      "Briant Items

The schools of our township are progressing very well, and will close in about three weeks. Teachers are John Hart, F. Rayn, R.F. Lewis, C.E. Cartwright, Arthur Lalley, S.A. Butcher, J.W. RICHARDSON, Miss Bond, Miss Sallie Votaw and Miss Elmer Votaw."

      Also found is the following:

The Portland Commercial, Vol.XIV, No. 25, p3, col.2, Portland, Ind.: Thursday, 6 Feb 1879, Recorder's Office, Courthouse, Portland, Ind.

"John RICHARDSON, of Redkey, gave us a social call Wednesday."

In the Treman book, John W. and Sarah Jane were said to reside at 407 W. Jackson St., Muncie. That would be very close to the downtown area of Muncie, and no other mention has put them inside the city limits of Muncie.

Frank Vaughn Richison, a great grandson of John Webster said the following in a letter to me.

"It is my understanding that John Webster Richison was the one that had the money, because he left each of his children $75,000 apiece, which at the time was a considerable amount. I also understood that my grandfather [Frankl Albert Richison] increased his inheritance by investing in real estate, stocks and bonds and the stock market, but lost a bundle in the stock market crash of 1929."

In a deposition in support of claim for a widow's pension by Anna Richison, widow of Jasper Newton Richison, John describes the living arrangement in Ohio from 1856 through 1871-72 and his move to Indiana.

1856 - John R. left the "home place" and purchased 11 acres in Pike Twp., 4 miles from "home place." Jasper was living with parents on the 11 acres.

May 1864 - Jasper enlisted & John W. was married & living on "home place"

1865 - Elizabeth (Cory) Richison died. Henry Brandenburg bought 3/4 of the "home place" and Newton bought 1/4 of it and John W. went to live on the 11 acres with John R.

      13 May 1869 - Newton married.

late 1869-early 1870 - Newton sold his 1/4 of "home place" to Brandenburg and rented a farm between "home place" and the 11 acres

1870 - Newton moved to DeGraff, Ohio.

1871-72 but definitely before1873 when Carrie was born, John W. moved to Jay Co., Indiana.

In Meeks [Mortuary] Book 4 which shows the fees charged for John W. Richison, it shows $20 for an interurban car. In the funeral notice, it says that "Friends of the family went to the home on a special funeral car on the traction line." It also says their home was north of the city.

In John's obituary that appeared in The Muncie (Indiana) Evening Press, it wrongly states that he had "lived in Delaware county most of his life . . . " It also lists Frank Richison of Portland, Ind., as a survivor and goes on to list the other children. F. A. Richison of Muncie is listed but Silas A. Richison is not and Silas lived in Muncie while Frank did not. F. A. should have been listed as S.A. to be correct.

An estate administration was set up in 1911, several year after John & Sarah died, for both John and Sarah by their sons William and Silas in order to clear up the title to some real estate. There is no mention of what real estate or where it might be located. The estate was in Delaware Co., Indiana, so it would seem probable that the real estate was in that county.

There is a family plot of 12 graves at Beech Grove Cemetery in Muncie, Indiana where John W., wife Sarah, sons Micajah, William, Charles, and Silas, and daughter Margaret are buried. Charles' two wives and a daughter and William's wife and a daughter are also buried there.

Cemetery records show that Micajah may not be buried there even though there is a headstone for him.

All the grave markers look alike and several were probably placed there at the same time. Both William and Silas left what were fairly large estates with the proceeds going to the remaining siblings. It would seem likely that many of the stones were perhaps purchased as a group and placed on the family plot.
