    painter and paper hanger
    • I have pictures of my father and Dallas Ray on a job together as they both were painters and paper hangers. Both could also do plastering and many years after Dallas died, I had to hire a plasterer for a ceiling in my home. He was an older man and as we talked he explained that when he was younger, he watched a plasterer working at a school near his home and found out the man was making $5 a day. He said, "I determined right then to learn to plaster so I could get some of that big money!" Our conversation continued and we eventually determined that it was my grandfather, Dallas, that had been doing that school and who later taught my plasterer the trade.

Their son, Frank, said that Dallas worked for less than one year at National Cash Register in Dayton, Ohio before they returned to Jay Co., when their daughter Pauline was born in Sep 1907. [RICHISON - Correspondence: 14]

      __________________________________________________

(The date of 11 Aug 1906 was written in pencil, again right under the marriage license clipping.)

      "MARRIAGE LICENSE

Dallas Richison 22, woodworker, of Westchester to Olive Alexander, 19 of Wayne township, daughter of Thomas Alexander."

[I believed the Westchester was a typo at first and that it should be Winchester but their son Frank said no and sent me a map showing where Westchester was located. He also said he had been told that Dallas ran a small restaurant or cafe near Bryant in his younger days and thinks that might have been in Westchester. They did not move to Winchester from Jay County until about 1923 or 1924 and lived at 631 Stone Street until they moved to the house on the hill about 1930-31. [RICHISON - Correspondence: 14]

      __________________________________________________

Son, Frank, said he thought Dallas had done some work involing army barracks during World War I in a back-woodsy place in Kentucky called Sitson or Stitson. [RICHISON - Correspondence: 14]

[The following appeared in The Winchester News, 26 Feb 1947, Page 2, Column 1]

DALLAS RICHISON REPORTED 'FAIR' AFTER BAD FALL

Dallas Richison, local painter and paper hanger, today remains in a 'fairly good' condition at the Randolph County hospital where he is being treated for injuries suffered Tuesday morning when he fell from a ladder at the home of Mrs. Russell Moorman, 414 South Main street.

Richison was hanging paper above the stairway at the Moorman home when he fell a distance of more than 20 feet, striking his head on the stair banister as he fell. Rushed to the hospital he was treated for severe scalp lacerations, concussion, and a fractured right wrist. X-rays will be taken later today to determine the possibilities of a skull fracture.

Richison, who had been in poor health recently, is thought to have become weak or dizzy as he worked on the scaffolding high above the floor. His son was working with him at the time of his fall.

[The son who was with him when he fell was his oldest, Ophir Orlo.]
